After months in a coma, mother may meet her son for the first time

On December 6, pregnant mother Sharista Giles was in a devastating car accident that left her comatose.  While unconscious, Sharista’s son was delivered prematurely and weighed less than two pounds.  He has continued to develop and grow outside of his mother’s body, however, and now weighs over 6 pounds.  Months passed before, just over a week ago, Sharista opened her eyes for the first time since her accident.

The event was a shock and a joy to Sharista’s family, who had been informed that there was only a 10% chance that the 20-year-old would ever regain consciousness.  After she opened her eyes, Sharista’s father showed her a photo of her son, who is still in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) receiving care following his extremely premature birth.

According to the Daily Mail, when Sharista saw the picture of her son, she followed the photo – a remarkable feat for a woman who had a 90% chance of never even opening her eyes again.  Sharista’s mother recalls: “When he turned around to put it back on the bulletin board, she turned her neck, her whole head trying to follow and find the picture again.”

Sharista’s physicians are unsure of her prognosis going forward, but she has already beat the odds once, and her family hopes for her continued recovery, which would be a great gift to her young son.
