Governor Perry endorses Preborn Pain Bill for 2013 Legislative Session

Governor Rick Perry was in Houston Tuesday to announce his support for Texas Right to Life’s priority legislation for 2013, the Preborn Pain Bill.

The Preborn Pain Bill will establish the state’s interest in protecting the lives of preborn children who can feel pain.  The medical consensus confirms that the neurological and physiological structures are fully formed at twenty weeks of development, and therefore, children can feel pain at that stage of development.  The Preborn Pain Bill would then ban abortion at that 20-week mark, sparing these children from excruciating dismemberment during an abortion.

“I don't think there is any issue that better fits the definition of ‘compelling state interest’ than preventing the suffering of our state's unborn.” Perry told media and Pro-Life activists gathered at the press conference hosted by Texas Right to Life and The S ource for Women in Houston.

In addition to urging the legislature to pass the Preborn Pain Bill, Perry called on the Texas Legislature to strengthen laws to hold the abortion industry accountable to current medical standards.

Perry’s remarks showed his support of Texas Right to Life’s priority legislation, and also his dedication to Texas ranking as a leading Pro-Life state.

“Now, to be clear, my goal, and the goal of many of those joining me here today, is to make abortion, at any stage, a thing of the past…. We cannot, and we will not, stand idly by while the unborn are going through the agony of having their lives ended,” said Perry.

Texas Right to Life has enjoyed a strong working relationship with Governor even since before he was elected Governor.  Governor Perry has achieved a long list of Pro-Life accomplishments, and Texas Right to Life shares his hope that passage and enactment of the Preborn Pain Bill is added to his list next.
