Where Do Texas Attorney General Candidates Stand on Life? Here’s Who Signed the Pro-Life Pledge
The most important race in the 2026 Election to Pro-Life Texans is the Texas Attorney General. All Republicans running for this position replied to Texas Right to Life’s Pro-Life Pledge. Texans are blessed to have three candidates fully commit to all seven specific expectations for the next attorney general.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been a steady leader on the defense and enforcement of Pro-Life policies. Paxton’s list of Pro-Life accomplishments is long and ranges from successfully defending the Texas Heartbeat Act before the Supreme Court to suing activist physicians mailing deadly abortion pills into Texas and hiding behind pro-abortion state laws in New York. However, Paxton is not seeking re-election for this office, and Texas voters are faced with a critical task: choosing who will be the leader to take charge of the defense, enforcement, and protection of Texas’ Pro-Life laws and values.
More so, the Texas attorney general holds a uniquely powerful role in shaping abortion policy nationwide, with the authority to bring major constitutional questions before federal courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. Roe v. Wade originated from a Texas case, and our state bears a special responsibility to lead the charge in restoring full legal protection for preborn children and working to end abortion across the United States.
In addition to requesting the completion of comprehensive questionnaires and a thorough candidate interview for this race, Texas Right to Life PAC gave each Republican candidate the opportunity to sign a Pro-Life Pledge. This pledge was offered to share with all voters, regardless of any ultimate endorsement decision. Thankfully, all four Republican candidates have completed and returned the pledge, which includes State Senator Joan Huffman, State Senator Mayes Middleton, Aaron Reitz, and Texas Congressman Chip Roy.
Middleton, Reitz, and Roy agreed to all seven Pro-Life commitments.
Huffman agreed to five of the Pro-Life commitments that Texas Right to Life drafted and supplied her own version of two commitments on the pledge.

Texas Right to Life has high expectations for the next attorney general and looks forward to working together on many issues. The Pro-Life Pledge asks each Republican candidate to promise Texans they will work in seven specific areas to protect and save innocent human life:
1. Defend Preborn Children
I affirm that Life begins at fertilization, and I will defend Texas laws that protect all preborn children, without agreeing to or advocating for any exceptions for abortion other than situations where the mother is facing a life-threatening physical condition. Middleton, Reitz, and Roy committed.
2. Enforce Pro-Life Laws
I will ensure abortion bans are fully enforced, including prosecuting violators when local authorities fail to act, and I will pursue action against those trafficking abortion pills into Texas. All Republican candidates committed.
3. Combat Out-of-State, International, and Online Abortion Networks
I will use all legal tools available to pursue international and out-of-state abortion drug traffickers, groups, and websites that advertise or facilitate illegal abortion pills in Texas, including those hiding behind pro-abortion shield laws. All Republican candidates committed.
4. Protect Vulnerable Patients
I will advocate for patients’ right to life-sustaining care, oppose involuntary withdrawal of treatment, support reforms to strengthen family protections in medical decision-making, and reject the weaponization of brain death declarations. All Republican candidates committed.
5. Defend Human Dignity in Bioethics
I will oppose all human embryo-destroying practices, including in biotech research and development, while supporting ethical medical innovation. All Republican candidates committed.
6. Uphold Constitutional Rights of the Preborn
I will promote and champion legal arguments under the 5th and 14th Amendments to secure recognition of preborn children as persons protected by the United States Constitution. All Republican candidates committed.
7. Advance the Cause of Life Nationally
I will use the influence of the Texas Attorney General’s office to build a nationwide legal defense of the Right to Life, including by advocating for federal protections for preborn children. Middleton, Reitz, and Roy committed.
Texas Right to Life appreciates each Republican candidate for attorney general who replied to the Pro-Life Pledge. Life is still the paramount issue for Republican voters, and the pledge serves as an important tool for voters to decide who to vote for this year, as well as what we should expect from our Republican attorney general after the election.
