Election 2024: The Fight Between Life Protections and Abortion Expansion
The fight over abortion has intensified over the last couple of years, with the landmark reversal of Roe v. Wade (1973), which had previously prevented states from protecting Life for over 50 years. Abortion remains a critical issue in elections, especially in this first presidential election following Roe’s overturning. It is crucial now more than ever to vote for Life.
Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has made the abortion issue a focal point of her campaign. Harris entered the presidential race with a pledge to restore Roe, overturning states’ preborn protections and codifying abortion nationally. She states that if Congress “passes a law to restore reproductive freedom, as president of the United States I will sign it into law.” Her proposed nationwide policy would override nearly every Pro-Life state law, significantly affecting protections for the preborn. Additionally, Harris is likely to continue to expand upon the Biden Administration’s efforts to challenge state-level abortion bans.
The Democratic National Convention chose Kamala Harris to champion and carry out their most pro-abortion platform ever. The Democratic Party does not and will not protect women or their preborn children. They are solely focused on expanding abortion access, no matter the cost.
Donald Trump has been less clear on how he would approach the issue if granted another term as president. When asked about abortion, he says that it is a ‘state’s rights issue.’ Though states have led the charge to protect Life, some states will never protect their preborn children from abortions and quit committing abortions on children from Pro-Life states, unless the federal government intervenes.
Donald Trump’s ambiguity on the issue is not what many Pro-life advocates want to hear, and we hope he will change his tune if elected. But Trump is the Republican presidential candidate. He is the nominee for a party that recognizes that the preborn are children that need protection. To be clear, the Republican Party’s platform on abortion is far from perfect. Although the Republican Party’s platform is weak in comparison to what many Pro-Lifers hoped for, it’s the only major party that supports the Pro-Life position.
Texas has a few critical and close races, whose results could have significant effects on our life-saving laws. Pro-Life Republican Adam Hinojosa will rematch Democrat incumbent Morgan LaMantia, who won the seat over Hinojosa in 2022 by just 659 votes. The race for Texas’ United States Senator is set to be a tight one as well, with two-term incumbent Ted Cruz facing a well-funded challenge from current Congressman Colin Allred. Though Allred is billing himself as a moderate compared to Cruz, Allred’s website states that he “strongly opposed the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision and supports legislation to make the protections under Roe v. Wade the law of the land.”
