Colin Allred’s ‘Moderate’ Stance on Abortion? It’s More Extreme Than You Think!

Democrat Colin Allred, running to unseat Senator Ted Cruz in Congress, claimed his position on abortion is moderate. Ironically, he cited one of the most extreme pro-abortion policies in the country to illustrate his position. If Allred believes the “Woman’s Health Protection Act” is “moderate,” it shows how outrageously pro-abortion he actually is.

The WHPA is a pro-abortion federal bill that claims to “codify Roe v. Wade.” The bill passed through the House of Representatives but failed in the Senate, with Allred, a sitting member of Congress for Texas District 32, voting in favor. However, most Americans would be shocked to know what “codifying Roe” actually entails.

Under the WHPA, parents would have no right to know if their minor daughter had an abortion. Preborn children who are fully formed but cannot survive outside the womb would be aborted—as late as 22 weeks. Any legislation protecting these babies at 22 weeks or sooner would be null and void. By this point in pregnancy, children already have their own unique DNA, a heartbeat, and can even feel pain. Many states currently have laws protecting the unborn for these reasons, but they would all be rendered ineffective if Allred had his way.

Make no mistake: Leftists like Allred don’t believe in limiting abortion at 22 weeks, when the baby can survive outside the womb. This bill includes a massive loophole that would permit abortion up to the moment of birth for “health” reasons, which is undefined. This means the loophole could include anything, such as social, emotional, or financial “health.”

The WHPA would also endanger pregnant women by prohibiting states from requiring abortionists to perform certain tests, such as checking for Rh incompatibility and ectopic pregnancy. These can impact future fertility, and if not addressed, lead to serious injury or death.

The Democrat talking point that they aim to “codify Roe” does not mean bringing the status quo back from two years ago, before the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling. By the time the Supreme Court overturned Roe, the 1973 opinion was already diluted to the point that states could defend babies at any stage in development by adopting the strategy of the Texas Heartbeat Act. When Allred claims to support “codifying Roe,” he means turning back to 1973 and undoing decades’ worth of protections for preborn children that have been upheld by the Supreme Court. He made his intentions clear during his debate with Ted Cruz, saying, “When I’m the United States’ Senator we’ll restore a woman’s right to choose,” and, “will make Roe v. Wade the law of the land.”

When Senator Cruz was pressed about abortion at the 2023 Texas Tribune Festival and in the 2024 debate, he accurately challenged this “moderate” characterization of the WHPA by pointing out that the bill would have invalidated ALL state Pro-Life laws and essentially legalized abortion up to the point of birth — a stance that can hardly be described as “moderate.”

Colin Allred is clearly lying about the WHPA and his truly extreme stance on abortion. He is playing to voters who say they support Roe v. Wade but are not fully aware of what Roe originally entailed.

In reality, as Senator Cruz has cited, only 9 percent of Americans support the actual policies within the WHPA bill. When asked about when specifically they think abortion should be limited, 72 percent of Americans, including 60 percent of Democrat voters, believe that abortion should not be legal beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy, a limitation adhered to by most of the developed world.

Allred is wrong for Texas. We are a Pro-Life state, evidenced by our leadership on the Texas Heartbeat Act and legal protection of all preborn children from the moment of fertilization. Senator Cruz has proven time and time again that he is a defender for the preborn and for vulnerable Texans. With a Pro-Life leader like Cruz representing Texans in the U.S. Senate, pro-abortion politicians and activists will always face strong opposition to their outrageous anti-Life and anti-woman legislation.
